  1. Most of what we know about Lecha's life was revealed in this week's reading, and a colorful life she has led indeed. It struck me that in so many ways she is like her grandmother Yoeme: Lecha inherited her powers to locate the dead, her fiery personality and irreverent humor, and the fact that she abandoned her child Ferro only to show up in his life again later. Zeta also bears Yoeme's influence, in her ability to talk to snakes that have wandered among the dead. The mysticism and witchcraft in the book is quite fascinating, especially because so far it has been confined to the women.
In many cultures twins are considered evil, and old Yoeme herself "teased the girls, telling them she had advised their mother to get rid of one or the other of them right away. Twins were considered by some to be bad luck" (115). In modern life, we often hear of twins having a special connection, be it the development of their own language or the ability to know what the other is thinking. Identical twins separated at birth often have the same likes and dislikes, and are later found out to have led very similar lives. I can't help but wonder if there is something mystical about twins, some sort of split consciousness that taps into a realm the rest of us aren't familiar with.
As far as Lecha's ability is concerned, I have to wonder if Seese knows that she can only see dead bodies. If Seese IS aware of this, I feel like she would not be wasting her time with Lecha and would instead be out searching for Monte.
